Rosacea

Rosacea is a common condition that affects men and women 20 to 50 years old. In this condition, sometimes referred to as "adult acne", small blood vessels on the face and sometimes around the eyes become widened and more visible. The face may also have a red, ruddy look especially on the cheeks, central forehead and chin. While the cause is unknown, patients are prone to blushing and flushing and get red faces when exposed to anything hot. Prolonged widening of the blood vessels can form telangectasias (visible small vessels) and stimulation of the skin's oil glands leading to bumps and red lesions.

Patients with rosacea complain that their skin is often sensitive and easily irritated. It feels hot to them, especially during flushing episodes. Red, acne-like bumps may be painful if present. The condition may also affect the eyes, chest and back.

Occasionally, redness in the center of the face may be a sign of another condition such as systemic lupus, drug reaction or rarely a more serious underlying condition such as malignancy.

This condition rarely gets better by itself and may last for years. Fortunately, with treatment, this condition can be controlled successfully.

Dr. Schlesinger and his staff work with a variety of successful medical and laser-based treatments that can provide control and even long-term relief of the symptoms and signs of rosacea.
