We have used ultraviolet light for decades to treat psoriasis with much success. As time has passed, the bulbs have improved and we have discovered that by narrowing the band of light used, we could make the treatment safer and more effective.
Lasers emit one wavelength or frequency of light and it has been determined through research that the best wavelength is 308 nanometers, in the ultraviolet range. This is basically purple to beyond purple colored light. The laser delivers this targeted ultraviolet light in a beam about two inches in diameter and each pulse lasts only a second or two.
Large areas can be treated in a short amount of time and it is safer because only the affected areas are treated. Treatments are twice a week and usually are performed for 5-8 weeks on average.
The good news is that the psoriasis plaques stay away anywhere from 11 weeks to up to six months or more.
The laser is ideal for treating psoriasis that does not involve the whole body. In fact, it works very well if the sufferer is already on another treatment as the laser can be an add-on for spots that just don’t seem to go away.
Even better is that most insurance companies now cover the procedure as it has been recognized as highly effective and safe.
Approved by the FDA, the laser may be something to look into if you continue to be frustrated with psoriasis.
