Port Wine Stains Treatment with the Candela GentleYAG Laser

Birthmarks

Also known as Port-Wine Stains or Naevus Flammeus, they are red to purple in color and can appear anywhere on the body. Most are easily seen at birth and can be flat or slightly raised. Usually permanent, treatment with the Candela GentleYAG laser can help reduce the color and improve the texture of the skin. Treatment helps to prevent nodules and growth, which can affect surrounding tissues.

Salmon Patch or Nevus Simplex

Also referred to as “angel kiss” or “stork bite”, they are salmon colored and are most often found on the nape of the neck. Also appearing on the forehead, upper eyelids, and on the central face, they usually fade with time. Treatment with the laser can reduce the appearance of the more obvious lesions.

Strawberry Hemangioma

These have a red, raised and soft appearance and their size can vary. They may be present at birth or appear a few weeks after. Usually, they grow, but then start to fade and turn gray in color. Most are gone by age 5-10, but the laser or other methods may be necessary to remove them.

Venous Stain

A type of birthmark that is flat and bluish in color. It is made up of enlarged vein (venulous) vessels. They can sometimes open and bleed.

About the treatment

Treatments with the Candela GentleYAG laser are usually quite easy to tolerate. Most of the time, no advance preparation is required although sun avoidance and the avoidance of a tan before treatment is advised. Some lesions may require a series of treatment sessions that may take place over a period of weeks or months. While treatments are tolerated well, you may take advantage of one of several types of anesthesia including advanced topical numbing agents or local anesthesia. There is no downtime except for some mild temporary swelling of the skin in the first 1-2 days after the procedure. Aftercare is minimal.
